5 Pretty Up-Dos For Medium/Long Hair

Who else is sick of the top knot by now? A few years ago a messy bun might have channelled the coveted ‘off duty model’ look, but now it just looks lazy (which it is – I know I’m not the only one to turn to the trusty top knot to cover up a bad hair day). Sorry girls, it’s time to start making an effort with your up dos again. Whether you are looking for a new everyday style staple, or a fresh new look for the evening, the up do has the duel benefit of looking good and keeping long hair out of your face. Luckily, I have a few suggestions which can be copied and requested in any Islington hair salon, or simply tried at home.

 1. The preppy ponytail
‘Back to school’ chic is certainly seasonal! This year, position your ponytail at the crown of your head, and add a bit of volume by backcombing a small section before securing the do with a soft band. Style out your ponytail by curling a few sections of it, and enjoy that bounce!

2. The fishtail
It’s the loom band theory applied to hair. Taking four or more sections of hair, braid yourself a funky fishtail plait – extra points for a side parting. This do looks even better when it’s a bit ‘undone’ (think Blake Lively), so work a tight braid during office hours, then shake it out for the evening.

3. Heidi braids
Braids are a lifesaver for anyone with longer hair. If you can do a French braid or a fishtail, you’re all set for the season ahead. The catwalks were full of intricate braided dos recently, with French braids starting at the root of the side parting before being wound around the circumference of the head, like fashionista Heidi.

 4. Jewel effect
Granted, this is not an everyday kind of up do, but for special occasions, give your boring old bun a shot of glamour by attaching a bit of costume jewellery. Go for maximum bling with costume jewellery in diamante and coloured jewels which will catch the light and make your hair literally shine.

5. The sweep
It’s the trend that is ‘sweeping’ Hollywood – just look at the red carpet for last week’s Emmys. LA’s finest can’t get enough of the sexy side sweep, where long hair is bunched up dramatically to one side of the head, allowing a glitzy earring to shimmer away on the other side. Don’t be afraid to go big with this do – curl those tendrils and do not scrimp on the hairspray. Glamorous earrings are non-negotiable.
